Born in Te Roti (New Plymouth) on 22nd January 1895. He was the first child and the first generation of Walshes.
He went to school at Rawhitiroa.
When he left school and he worked on the farms as a sharemilker. His career progressed and he was promoyed to the Eltham Dairy Co.
On 15th of November 1916, John left New Zealand with the N.Z Expeditionary Forces under the number 10/4017 and served with B company of the Wellington Rifle Regiment.
He embarked on the 10th April 1916 from Wellington on the Willochra or the Tofua for service in Egypt and the Suez. His unit was then sent to France.
He was injured on the 8th 1917.
